Organization: Oxbow, Inc.
This field trip will focus on the plants that can be found in the Oxbow, especially prairie plants, many of which will be in bloom at this season. Join our trip leader Dr. Denis Conover for a pleasant summer morning walk in the Oxbow. Denis is an Oxbow Inc. advocate and board member, a UC professor, and a skilled botanist and naturalist. Denis has conducted vascular plant surveys in the Oxbow since 1997 and to date has identified over 400 species in the Oxbow proper.
Denis plans to spend the morning looking at the diversity of plants found in the Oxbow. He will help us identify the plants we see, explain their ecology and answer all of our botanical questions. Denis has interests in all aspects of nature and will also point out the birds and other wildlife we come across during our walk. The abundant breeding birds of the Oxbow are expected to be obvious and vocal.
Participants should be prepared for a lot of walking, with a slow pace over flat terrain with a lot of stopping to look at plants and birds. This trip should end around 12 pm, but Denis will likely go on for another couple of hours and invites everyone who is able to join him for this last leg. Denis suggests wearing long pants and boots for walking in tall grass and possibly mud (it is the Oxbow after all). July will likely be hot, so you might also consider bringing water, sunscreen and insect repellent for your comfort. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Denis.
