Cincinnati is the first 2030 District to establish a district-wide healthy building model.
This innovative model, created by the Cincinnati 2030 District, focuses on regional health needs and promotes healthy behaviors and building performance to address chronic disease. In collaboration with the International WELL Building Institute, and using the local Community Health Needs Assessment, this program uses the building blocks of the WELL Building Standard, fine-tuned to the unique health needs of the Greater Cincinnati community.
Presenters:
In her role with IWBI, Dr. Angela Loder is responsible for identifying, directing, and managing evidenced-based research that supports the WELL Building Standard. As a research scientist, strategic planner, and educator, Dr. Loder brings over a decade of experience in interdisciplinary research and partnerships around occupant health, well-being, and the built and natural environment. Prior to joining IWBI, Dr. Loder ran her own consulting firm, working with municipal, regional, and federal governments on urban planning, sustainability, and health. Projects included community outreach on values around the urban forest for Boulder Urban Forestry; writing and implementing a $1.6 million dollar state-funded Active Living and Healthy Eating grant for Jefferson County, CO; and a federal interdisciplinary project linking energy conservation, occupant comfort, and behavior. Her doctoral research looked at the impact that visual and physical access to a green roof in Chicago and Toronto had on office workers’ concentration, stress, and creativity, and was the first large-scale multi-method study on the health impacts of green roofs. Dr. Loder is Adjunct Faculty at the University of Denver, and has been a core member of the Health in Buildings Roundtable (HiBR) with the NIH since 2009. She is a Canada-US Fulbright Scholar, a board member of the Institute for the Built Environment at Colorado State University, adjunct faculty at Denver University, and part of the first cohort of WELL Faculty and a WELL AP. Dr. Loder has presented her research at numerous international conference and published in academic and popular media. Her book “Small-Scale Urban Greening: Creating Places of Health, Creativity, and Ecological Sustainability” will be published with Routledge. She holds a collaborative PhD from the University of Toronto in Health Geography and Centre for the Environment.
Dominic Ramos Ruiz is a Senior Policy Consultant to the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), where he supports relationships with local, state, and federal agencies as well as NGO's and non-profit organizations to encourage healthy and sustainable building practices and integrate health metrics into public policy, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and environment, social, governance (ESG) investment frameworks.
Dominic has a cross-disciplinary background encompassing urban planning, real estate development, technology and environmental sustainability. Prior to IWBI, Dominic worked for New York-based Weitzman Associates, where he advised institutional investor and developer clients on project feasibility and marketability, and for Lane4 Property Group where he was involved in the development, construction, and management of multiple mixed-use development projects. As an undergraduate, he worked as a fellow with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, providing research assistance to regional counsel for real estate, zoning, and land-use litigation.
Dominic is a graduate of Kansas State University, where he earned a master’s degree in regional and community planning. He serves on the board of New York’s Design Trust for Public Space as well as The Public Theater's Young Partner Board. An active member of the Urban Land Institute, Dominic co-chairs the New York Young Leaders Programming Committee and serves as Vice Chair of the national Public-Private Partnerships Council. He is a member of the MoMA Contemporary Arts Council, Municipal Art Society of New York, and ACE Mentor through which he mentors high school students interested in architecture, construction, and engineering.
Dr. Lauren Bartoszek is the Manager of Population Health Strategies at The Health Collaborative. She works with the Generation Health (Gen-H) team on the regions health agenda utilizing the Community Health Needs Assessment data to drive policy, systems, and environmental strategies addressing health equity through a collaborative approach. In her time with THC she has been involved in other ongoing projects with Gen-H including addressing food insecurity in a partnership with Green Umbrella’s Food Policy Council and transportation in partnership with the Council on Aging. Prior to her work at THC, she was an Assistant Professor at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio where she taught undergraduates in the Health Promotion program and helped start the Health Education National Honorary Chapter Eta Sigma Gamma. Dr. Bartoszek holds a PhD in Health Education from the University of Cincinnati, is a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), and has published over 10 peer-reviewed papers on topics including substance abuse prevention and adolescent health. She and her husband also became parents to a little girl, Beatrice, in April of 2020.
