Organization: Fairfield Parks and Recreation Department

The Fairfield Parks and Recreation Department, through a generous donation from Duke Energy, will celebrate the 51st anniversary of Earth Day with a ceremonial tree planting at Huffman Park (2100 John Gray Road) and a ground-breaking ceremony for the future “Duke Energy Nature Trail”. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, only a limited number of staff will be on-site (while practicing physical distancing) to bring you the celebration remotely through a Facebook Live feed. The Parks and Recreation Facebook Live event will take place at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 22.

For the last several years, Duke Energy has partnered with the Department to celebrate Earth Day. This annual event is an extremely important day for both organizations, who take great strides in protecting our environment and social responsibilities. The celebration will also include a ground-breaking ceremony for the development of the “Duke Energy Nature Trail”, which will be established over the next year through a generous donation of $5,000 from the Duke Energy Foundation Nature Grant process in 2020. The funding will assist in a project that will connect the two distinct areas of Huffman Park with a natural trail and reforestation of the park. Reforestation of this area will be vital to the environment by expanding the community’s tree canopy, restoring native woodland and wildlife habitats and expanding on the department’s memorial tree and bench program.
