Evidence of an Ancient Comet Airburst Event in the Oxbow at the Jennison-Guard Site Micrometeoroids, positive Ir and Pt anomalies, and a burned charcoal-rich Hopewell habitation surface were identified in the University of Cincinnati’s excavations at the Jennison-Guard site. These independent proxies demonstrate that a cosmic airburst event occurred over the Ohio River valley during the late Holocene.

Radiocarbon ages establish that the event occurred sometime between 1691-1541 B.P. (259-410 CE), a time when 69 near-Earth comets were historically documented. The discovery of a comet airburst expands our understanding of the frequency and impact of cataclysmic cosmic events on complex human societies and helps explain the cultural downturn of the Hopewell Cultural Complex.
