The Rise and Fall of the Callery Pear

Dr. Culley will present her research on the Callery Pear. Dr. Culley notes that the once-popular horticultural species has reproduced prolifically to blossom into an environmental pest!  In fact Callery Pear soon will be banned from commercial sale (in Ohio Jan 2023 and in South Carolina in 2024). More states are discussing a ban as well, as the Callery Pear has aggressively invaded natural areas. Even folks not knowledgeable in horticulture are gaining a better understanding of the detrimental effects of Callery pear, as it has invaded natural and privately owned areas. Especially noticeable in Spring, where it can be seen in bloom on road-cuts along expressways and other roads, the Callery Pear has been a troublesome invasive plant in the Oxbow as well as in our forests. Dr. Culley’s expertise with the species will be especially helpful to those in horticulture, land management, and plant ecology.
