Backpacking Skills Series: Navigation

Saturday, January 29, noon–2 p.m.

“Lost” and “Cast Away” are enjoyable from the comfort of your couch, but certainly not a scenario anyone wants to experience firsthand. Work with an outdoor instructor to learn how to translate what’s on the map to what’s underfoot in order to find your way out of sticky situations. Participants will take home provided maps and compass. For ages 12 and up. Great Parks is following protocols from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Ohio Department of Health. Physical distancing and sanitation recommendations will be followed. Winton Woods/Winton Centre Auditorium ($20/person, register by January 27)

Saturday, February 5, noon–2 p.m.

Saturday, February 19, 10 a.m.–noon

Think the backcountry is a good place to wing it? Think again! Plan for the unexpected with an outdoor instructor in a hands-on class that can help you prepare for the twists and turns of a journey through the backcountry. For ages 12 and up. Backpacking Skills Series: Gee, Dang It! Kit

Saturday, February 19, 1–3 p.m.

Emergencies happen. When they do, grab your “Gee, Dang It!” kit. In this class, you’ll learn how to pack everything that you need to deal with an emergency in a 32-ounce bottle. Fire, water, shelter and first aid will all be discussed. Participants will take home a “Gee, Dang It!” starter kit. For ages 12 and up. Great Parks is following protocols from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Ohio Department of Health. Physical distancing and sanitation recommendations will be followed.
