Sustainability Spotlights

Lower Price Hill Residents Help Envision a Climate Safe Neighborhood

In a partnership to create Climate Safe Neighborhoods, Groundwork Ohio River Valley, Green Umbrella and the City of Cincinnati Office of Environment and Sustainability recently piloted an Equity Advisory Group approach in Lower Price Hill. The group of residents met six times to dig into specific topics related to climate adaptation, providing their neighborhood expertise to help create a vision for their community.

We are grateful for the advisory group's many insights, which have been compiled into a map showcasing desired climate adaptation measures. Next steps include incorporating the vision into community planning processes, evaluating the engagement approach with the University of Cincinnati, and identifying opportunities for expanding the program.

Plan Your Low Stress Ride With Tri-State Trails' New Bike Map

Throughout the pandemic we've seen a significant interest in bicycling. New riders can explore our region's 570+ miles of trails and learn how to navigate the urban core with a great new bike map from Tri-State Trails. Thanks to 15 meetings with over 50 avid bicyclists around Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, the new low stress bike map shows you which roads are easier and more comfortable to traverse. Hear more about it in the recent bike month episode of Cincinnati Edition and look for copies of the map at your local bike shop, library or recreation center in June.

Learn Ways to Lower Your Congregation's Facilities Utility Bills

The Faith Communities Go Green impact team is hosting a free webinar on June 7 at 7:00 pm offering professional advice on how to lower your congregation’s utility bills and carbon footprint. Learn about different types of energy audits, which one is right for your facility, how to develop a plan from simple do-it-yourself projects to changing light fixtures to installing renewable technology plus funding options for nonprofits. This educational program is designed for house of worship executive directors, maintenance supervisors and congregational members. Get your faith community involved.

Greenspace Gem: Redbird Hollow Preserve

Protected by The Nature Conservancy and the Redbird Hollow Association, this 54-acre Ohio Natural Landmark is a 1.5-mile-long valley formed by the upper portion of Redbird Creek. A trail built on the abandoned right-of-way of an inter-urban electric rail line (closed in the 1920s) parallels the unpolluted creek. The wooded hollow has hosted several ecological studies since becoming a nature preserve.
