USDA Grant Will Help Expand Our Region's Farm to School Programs
The Greater Cincinnati Regional Food Policy Council's Farm to School Impact Team has been hard at work developing the region’s existing farm to school programs into a collaborative network. With the support of a newly awarded USDA grant, the FPC will leverage the success of Cuyahoga County’s Feed our Future model, convene a regional advisory board, establish a Regional Farm to School Curriculum Coordinator, launch a training program for teachers and work with key partners on education content and local menu takeovers!
“Helping schools expand access to healthy, locally grown produce through these grants is
just one of the many ways USDA is transforming America’s food system. Not only will this give children more nutritious food options in school, it supports local agriculture economies, while connecting them to the farms and farmers that grow the food we all depend on.” - Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack

Volunteers Help Create Outdoor Learning Stations for CPS Students
Last Saturday, over 20 volunteers from the Cincinnati Rotary Club met at Gamble Montessori Elementary for a fun workday. The day supported a strategy of Green Umbrella's CPS Outside Impact Team: creating outdoor learning stations on school campuses, so students can learn in and explore nature at school. Volunteers worked on creating an outdoor classroom under the boughs of three huge oak trees, on trails into the school’s mature woodland and on clearing honeysuckle to allow for more space to explore the woods. A deer fence around the orchard and garden will be installed later this summer.
The Rotary Club will continue working with Imago to complete these, and additional, outdoor learning spaces envisioned by the Gamble learning community in the upcoming year. If you're interested in volunteering or have ideas for an outdoor schoolyard transformation contact Ryan.

Greenspace Gem: Heritage Park Riverfront
The best remaining bottomland forest in the region occupies the mile-long Great Miami River shoreline of Heritage Park. Protected by Colerain Township Parks and Services, the mature woodland is composed of floodplain species such as cottonwood, sycamore, silver maple, box elder and black willow. These are trees that are able to tolerate frequent submergence, saturated soil and reduced soil aeration. Bald eagles nest here, and shorebirds, herons and kingfishers frequent the river borders. Learn more about our region's Greenspace Gems!
